Learn Robotics for Beginners


This is a beginning course in Robotics. The Learn Robotics Training course is to provide an introduction to robotics and encourage young people to explore the technology that robotics provides. We hope that the participants through their exposure to this training will become interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects that will open the door to career opportunities in space technology, aviation, robotics engineering, medical research and more.  The field of Robotics is one of the fastest growing industries on the planet. It can also be used to automatically handle computer tasks that are highly structured, routine, and repetitive (Robotics Process Automation) – RPA

This course covers a variety of multidisciplinary topics necessary to understand the fundamentals of designing, building, and programming robots. The objective of this course is to introduce the student to basic programming as well as problem solving strategies. This course will involve students in the development, building and programming of a robot.

What is a Robot?

A Robot is electromechanical devices which will sense its environment process it and reacts to its environment without manual intervention. The word robot can refer to both physical robots and virtual software agents, but the latter are usually referred to as bots

The field of robotics comprises at least four major branches of learning:

  • Electrical Engineering (circuits and sensors)
  • Mechanical Engineering and Machining (gears, motors, and body)
  • Computer Science (pseudo-intelligent behaviour)
  • Arts (expression, style, and fun)

Robots can include these parts:

  • effectors (simulating arms, hands, legs and feet)
  • sensors (simulating senses that detect objects or things like heat and light and convert the objects’ information into symbols that computers understand)
  • computer (simulates the brain that controls the robot)
  • equipment (includes tools and mechanical fixtures)
  • power source (such as batteries or solar cells)

The cool part of this course is that you do not need to be an expert to build a decent robot.  Robotics provides an exciting opportunity to learn new skills and find hidden talents.

  • How to collaborate in groups and teams.
  • How to design robots for specific activities and scenarios.
  • To design, develop and complete robotic activities and challenges


Course Topics

Module 1: Introduction to Robotics

This section introduces students to the basic principles of robotics, engineering design and computer science. The topics will cover fundamental topics related to engineering processes, design, computer science and robotics. During this course, students will be required to gradually complete the design and construction of a robot Students will design their own robot using the knowledge acquired in this course.

Module 2: Introduction to Computer Programming

This section introduces students to computer programming. The topic covered in this section will help students understand how computers are programmed to execute tasks and how to approach problems analytically, implementing solutions for those problems in computer programs.

2.2 – The “Hello World!” program.
2.3 – Variables, arithmetic operations and logical operations.
2.4 – Conditional statements.
2.5 – Loops and Iterations.
2.6 – Functions and calls.

Module 3: Introduction to Electric Circuits

This section introduces students to fundamental concepts of electricity, electric circuits and electronics. The topics covered in this section will prepare students to understand how the majority of the components on the Arduino/Raspberry pi kit function and how they can be used to design circuits and robots.

3.2 – Fundamentals of electric circuits.
3.3 – Ideal sources and resistors.
3.4 – Ohm’s law and Kirchhoff’s law,
3.5 – Capacitors and RC circuits.

Module 4: Early Robotic Topics, Sensors, Actuators and Manipulators

This section introduces students to some of the basic components used to design robots. The topics covered in this section will prepare students to understand the challenges of robotic design. After completing this section students will be prepared to experiment with basic components of the robotic kit.

4.4 – Gears and other mechanical systems.

Module 5: Introduction to Robot Mechanics

This section introduces students to some of the fundamental models of robotic design. The topics covered in this section will help students understand the techniques used to design robots that perform different tasks, their limitations and advantages. After completing this section, students will be prepared to start designing their robots for the final project.

5.2 – Design models for ground mobile robots.
5.3 – Design models for mechanic arms and lifting systems.
5.4 – Fundamentals of kinematics.

Module 6: Advanced Topics on Robotics

This section introduces students to some advanced topics on Robotics. The topics covered in this section will give students a better perspective on some of the more advanced techniques of engineering, mathematics and science currently used in robotics. After completing this section, students should be able to re-evaluate their robotic designs using the new concepts studied. Students are encouraged to apply new ideas and challenging strategies.
